I hate advertisements

Yes, most of you will probably agree with me, advertisement on the internet is very annoying and sometimes causes long delays when loading pages.

I have the Adblock Plus Firefox extension which takes care of most ads on webpages, but lately I have noticed that there are more and more feeds (subscribed using the Sage RSS aggregator extension) that have adverts included in them. namely Slashdot, Reuters, 360Fanboy and many others.

More than 90% of the content I read is using feeds and so far I have been lucky to avoid ads this much, I suppose.

What is going to happen next? Are they not even going to bother writing stories and just fill everything with ads?

I filtrate Websites with the small tool Proxomitron. That kills Ads and Banners and the other peeving shit. RSS-Ads, i think, are not so annoying but not fine…

I don’t know whats the next big thing in advertisement but many Companies begin to use Games for inGame Ads. For ex. Battlefield 2142 … there are several Ads when you play it…

You know, you can write in German on here, although my German is slightly rusty as you may have noticed. ;)

I have no problem with ingame advertisement. Looking at Splinter Cell, that used to advertise Airwaves and now it’s Nivea and Rainbow Six Vegas which has AXE (Deo) all over the place.

Might have to look into Proxomitron….

It normally doesn’t annoy me as much, but today, after seeing the same ad accross 4 different feeds, well I just had enough. ;)

Advertisements are annoying at times yeah.I hate the ones they used to have on Yahoo! Launchcast Radio. But there’s nothing much that can be done about it because the whole world wide web survives mainly on advertisements.I too hate those EBay ones and some others providing job opportunities but there’s nothing much we can do.

I don’t do much to avoid popups.I’m so very thankful Mozilla Firefox takes good care of them. It’s probably the best browser that exists today. It’s better than IE but people may think otherwise.I also have a Zone Alarm Security Suite that does rest of the job and makes my browsing exprerience annoying ad’s free :)

I have to agree, I definitely like FireFox and prefer it to IE so much. Saying that I’ve never tried Opera and I keep hearing good things about that.

Advertisement, well we can’t fully avoid it, can we…. :(

  5. Posted December 12, 2006 at 4:45 pm | Permalink

Opera isn’t anywhere near Firefox.I’ve tried almost every browser.Everyone has some plus points and some minus ones.Firefox clearly wins on the pluses.

    Nope,it can’t be avoided.Just learn to ignore it ;)

  6. Posted December 12, 2006 at 4:49 pm | Permalink

Yeah, I’ll stick with FF. I don’t have any problems with it anyway.

And ignoring it? Well, I like to complain… ;)

  7. Posted December 12, 2006 at 4:58 pm | Permalink

    Yeah complain then.Uhh these fuc*ing ad’s

  8. Posted December 12, 2006 at 5:02 pm | Permalink

Yep, that’s the spirit of complaining. :D

    @ carocat

your German is great. However, my english is extrem rusty.

But, back to topic. ;-) In some MMORPGs the inGame Advertisement it really heavy. I think it was Anarchy Online in wich you can see on big billboards the trailers of upcoming Movies.

Its not ever bad, couse some of the games are free and will be financed throu the inGame Advertisement.

Well, my German should be better, I’ve only lived here for 3 years, but then again I never use it these days.

I have not played an MMO, I am an Xbox/360 gamer. Again, I don’t think the advertisement for real products is bad, I prefer that to fake adverts for products that don’t exist.

It depends on two point of views – from the viewer and the hoster. Most of the services you get for free (i.e. like Yahoo! Mail and stuff) is advertising based. What would you prefer? – Paid Mail to a free ad based alternative? I prefer ads to a certain extent like some links or small banners will do but some websites just have a website full of ads and very less content. But its my opinion. If I had a website I would have had a very small (120×120) space with a small ad. Nothing more.

FF2′s Extension is very good, plus my Kaspersky Internet Security does the rest. The feed ads are by the way provided using Textlinkads RSS Advertising tool. Oh and I support Opera!! :D

You can speak German? Willing to teach me some? :P

  12. Posted December 13, 2006 at 11:31 am | Permalink

Well, I agree with you that ads are necessary and I can live with them on the actual sites, but not on the feeds as well. I subscribe to feeds to simply receive a text only version of articles. I don’t want pictures or anything, especially as my net is fairly slow at the moment.

And I also have no problem with static ads, but as soon as they are animated, it’s annoying. It distracts too much.

I still haven’t tried Opera. Been meaning to for about one year now. Oh well, one day…. ;)

I can not only speak German, I am German. Teach you some? Sure. What do you want to know? :D

Yeah it’s annoying when it comes to feeds. I’ve been subscribing to Engadget’s feed for a while and hate the “FUTURE OF FORD” Ad. I mean at least change the ads! :) I don’t know but publishers will look at every space to advertise. It’s hightime the viewer’s came up with something. The Pop-up problem has nearly vanished and so will the banners too, who knows perhaps they’ll introduce blocking within readers too?

I hate Flash ads too, take too much bandwidth. Mostly those Yahoo! Mail ones where keep on advertising “Holy matrimonies” :D

I’m using Flock right now which is based on Firefox core. It has a very superb RSS reader that is way better than FF2′s NewsFox and Sage Extensions. [The reason I'm still using Flock] Opera 9 is a hallmark release and I think you should use it. Has support for widgets as well. I tend to have 3 browsers installed [apart from IE] and use them in turns. Better grip of the web I say!

You’re German? Kewl! How do I say “Hello, my name is Ashish.” in German?

  15. Posted December 13, 2006 at 12:32 pm | Permalink

Btw, talking about MMORPG’s or another other game for that matter, have you read about Second Life lately? They even support in-game advertising like conferences etc. I mean even corrupt Pure hearted Gamers! :D

You’re an XBox 360 Gamer? Wow. It’s a superb console and I think its THE Console to defeat Sony. I’m hoping to get an XBox 360 sometime soon… mainly a PC gamer.

  16. Posted December 13, 2006 at 12:48 pm | Permalink

Mal sehen, was wikipedia hat.

@ Ashish: Yeah, I’m susbribing to the Engadget one, but that advert is only text, whereas the ones named in my post are images. I don’t mind just text advertisement really, or I can live with it at least.

3 browsers? Nah, I like having just one, especially has my Firefox is almost perfect. Why trying to change if it works? ;) I can’t even remember the last time I used IE7….

Yeah, I heard about Second Life, apparently certain companies now market their real products in there first to see the response. It’s certainly an interesting form of Market Research. I can’t really comment though, I have never played the game, but from all I have heard lately, Second Life is definitely trying to merge real life with the game and I am not too sure if I really like that.

The 360 is great and I love it. It definitely is a strong competition. If you haven’t seen it yet, if you click on ‘Console Sales’ in my navigation bar on the top you can see the current sales for the 360, PS3 and the Wii. The numbers are fairly accurate and get update all the time.

And last but not least you picked a fairly simple sentence. The German is: “Hallo, mein Name ist Ashish.” :)

Flock is the one that integrates with Photobucket right? Easier to upload photos and all?

I remember I did a review of it and I did that before Scobleizer.Still he ended up getting all the cream.Oh God,why did Scobleizer ever have to be born, and if he had to be born, why did he have to make a blog? and if he had to make a blog, why WordPress? and if WordPress, why did it have to be a techy one? :( I’m gonna put “Kill Scobleizer” in my Christmas wishlist :D

Anyway here’s my review of Flock and it’s better than Scobleizer’s!

  18. Posted December 13, 2006 at 6:08 pm | Permalink

Hmmm, that is the second time you’ve mentioned Scobleizer now. You really don’t like him, do you? Why not?

  19. Posted December 13, 2006 at 8:26 pm | Permalink

I hate him.I’ve never been able to understand why his blog is always on the top of WordPress.Actually that’s the only thing I hate about blogging, however good your blog and your content maybe,in the end some post advertising Britney Spears’ crotch is gonna take all the credit away.

  20. Posted December 13, 2006 at 8:38 pm | Permalink

That is very true. The ranking and everything is silly. His blog is on there, well, he did use to work for MS and he goes to all sorts of functions.

    And he’s written a book. :P

  21. Posted December 13, 2006 at 8:43 pm | Permalink

So what,I bet even he gets bored seeing his name in there.

  22. Posted December 13, 2006 at 8:58 pm | Permalink

Would you get bored of seeing your name on top of all the wp.com blogs every day? I don’t think so. :P

  23. Posted December 14, 2006 at 3:12 pm | Permalink

Ish: Yes thats Flock. AND I did a review of Flock before both of you. Waaaaaaay back in June. [Could have been in May but my connection was down] I score there! Should I start a “Kill Ish and Scobliezer” campaign? :D I generally don’t visit Scob, but he posts some nice topics.

    Heres the link – http://actofwar.wordpress.com/2006/06/02/flocking-tergether/

  24. Posted December 14, 2006 at 5:59 pm | Permalink

Is this a competition now? who did which review first? :P

I read Scobleizer a lot I’m afraid. I think he has an interesting mix on topics, but overall I prefer //engtech.

    http://engtech.wordpress.com/

  25. Posted December 15, 2006 at 5:15 am | Permalink

Well Cat, there were a 100 reviewers who did the review before me. Just that I was pointing out that I did the review before both of them. :)

Well I hardly surf around blogs now. Don’t get time. Prefer RSS, and use TechCrunch as THE source to rely upon. :D

  26. Posted December 15, 2006 at 7:09 am | Permalink

I just thought it was funny how everyone is trying to compete with Scobleizer. ;)

  27. Posted December 15, 2006 at 7:20 am | Permalink

Oh wow,and I thought I was the only one who did that other than Scobleizer :D

I read Scobby a lot too,but he doesn’t seem to be very reliable and tends to get a bit boring at times.I think he should start writing about some other things too and make that blog a little more personal.I don’t envy him or anything and I know I can’t ever reach where he’s right now, unless of course I manage to crack his password and start writing sh*t on his blog :D

Cat,I agree,Engtech is better than Scobby.

Ashish,Yeah sure, you can start those movements.Let’s see what manages to kill me first..school or your movement :D

  28. Posted December 15, 2006 at 12:10 pm | Permalink

I’d bet School anyday.. hands down! :D

Cat: When youre at the top, the excitement ends. You just wait for somebody to come to the top and wrestle you and throw you down or defeat the person. The chase is exciting the aftermath isn’t. :)

  29. Posted December 15, 2006 at 6:48 pm | Permalink

Do you reckon? I’d like to get to the top. At some point anyway. ;)

  30. Posted December 16, 2006 at 5:31 am | Permalink

Sure, but I’d be hot on the heels as Future… I’ve said that so man y times you should know it by-heart now! :)

  31. Posted December 16, 2006 at 9:44 am | Permalink

    Haha, yeah, right. ;)
