Oblivion – I am NOT impressed

So I’ve been playing Oblivion most of the night. It is now 6 am and I just completed the ‘Knights of the Nine’ content which I have to say was excellent, although the last fight rather disappointing in comparison to the rest of the missions. But nevertheless it was a spectacular ending, intriguing puzzles and a good story. Although, whatever happened to my squire, he just disappeared?!

Finally finishing the missions made me want to continue with the Guild missions. I’ve still got a few Dark Brotherhood, Fighters and Thieves Guild missions outstanding in addition to some rather boring sounding sidemissions, such as ‘A Venerable Vintage’ which no doubt involves some tedious search all over the gameworld to find some wine bottles. Might just have to use a walkthrough for that.

Looking through my currently active quests, I noticed that the last Thieves Guild quest I did ['Turning a Blind Eye'] was still showing up as active and I do remember that I didn’t ever get further instructions as to where to start the next one. No wonder, turns out I have managed to find myself a nice little glitch in the game:

If you talk to the beggars after returning the stone to the Gray Fox, rather than before, Amusei may never come for the next quest and you may not be able to do quests for the Thieves Guild ever again.

  • On the PC, you can fix this glitch by opening the Console and typing in setstage TG08Blind 50. This will place you at the next stage with a message telling you that the Gray Fox will be contacting you soon.
  • On the PC, another way to fix this bug is to use the console command player.placeatme 0003563B. This will place Amusei directly in front of you. If “Turning a Blind Eye” is in your completed quest menu, Amusei should then tell you that the Gray Fox has a message for you.
  • On Xbox 360, there is no fix for this bug. The only way to resolve it is to load an earlier save and do the mission again.

Well, isn’t that just great. I’ve so far put in over 200 hours and now can’t complete the ‘Thieves Guild’ questline. That means I am not only missing out on some great missions, but also on useful rewards and 60 achievement points:

  • Master Thief, Thieves Guild, 10 points.
  • Guildmaster, Thieves Guild, 50 points.

I also can’t figure out where my next Fighters Guild mission is. I have looked at the walkthrough, went to all the Guild houses and no one has a mission for me. There seems to be some serious glitch with that as well.

Games these days seem to be in a lot worse state than they have ever been before. ‘Command and Conquer 3′ was released for the PC last week and there are problems everywhere. Many people are complaining that the multiplayer doesn’t work or released patches just seem to make the situation worse. Over on the 360 side of things I can’t actually think of any games that haven’t received an auto update yet. Some arcade games seem to have a new update once a month, others such as Rainbow 6 Vegas are launched with some horrendous glitches which were supposed to be fixed with an auto update, yet it didn’t.

There are ways of fixing problems with games on the PC, like the Oblivion glitch I have got, but on a console all we can do is wait for a patch which to be honest I don’t see happening anymore, after all the game is now over a year old.

Glitches are unfortunate and yes, I am angry and wish I wouldn’t have found one, yet it is also the first one that actually affected my gameplay in over 200 hours, but with a complex game such as Oblivion, is it not expected? The gameworld is huge, the characters many and just to think of the complexity with levelling/questing and just general gameplay. Games have come a very long way since the likes of Tetris, Pong and even Mario.

Yet it still leaves me with a part of the game I will not be able to complete after so far putting in over 200 hours….

There’s actually a more annoying glitch within the theives guild where you can’t finish the final part of the final quest. I had to create a whole new file and play the whole of the thieves guild through again in order to get the achievement and the rewards you get for finishing the guild.

  2. Posted April 3, 2007 at 1:02 pm | Permalink

And I thought I had it bad.

I’ve been looking round the net a bit more and it seems that the Thieves Guild missions are generally a bit glitchy. I am seriously not blaming Bethesda as such, after all Oblivion is truly enjoyable and I can definitely forgive them for such a thing.

It’s just annoying, I was kind of looking forward to doing it all with my character and I don’t want to resort to using one of the other characters that I gave up on quite early on.

But, I’ll probably end up doing it.

  3. Posted April 3, 2007 at 3:12 pm | Permalink

Yeah I was annoyed about it at first but I got really into the theives guild and enjoyed more a second time through so I can forgive them for the glitch.

  4. Posted April 3, 2007 at 4:35 pm | Permalink

That really sucks. The Thieves Guild is one of the more fun guild quests.

I can never finish these games. I found as I got higher and higher in level the game slowed down too much on my PC.

@ Tim: Yeah. I’m now hoping that I haven’t messed up the Fighters Guild ones. I’ll have to have a look at that once I want to look at Oblivion again. It may be a while.

@ engtech: That’s what I keep hearing. And the last mission is meant to be the best one out of all….

The lesson here is: Don’t waste 200 hours of your precious life on a game.

Also, don’t use a guide to find the wine bottles – it completely defeats the point if there’s then no skill involved.

  7. Posted April 3, 2007 at 7:21 pm | Permalink

Well, Nikita, I very much enjoyed those 200+ hours I spent on it.

Do you realise just how big Oblivion is? And just how many locations there are for those bottles?

i can’t believe you actually spent 200+ hours of your life on this game dewd! gawd! did you get the “tying shoelaces” skill? :0P

still, i agree with your comment about games not being properly finished any more, and requiring patches etc. to get over the many bugs. i don’t expect that to go away any time soon though, as hardware gets more complex & deadlines become ever more financially critical……

  11. Posted April 4, 2007 at 4:15 pm | Permalink

Why is everyone so surprised that I spent 200+ hours on it? How long have you sepent on your Hexic score Mr Webley or on Hexic alltogether?

Yeah, I really don’t mind bugs as much, especially not in a game like Oblivion, as it is just so big. Getting a bit annoyed now though, as this issue has been in the game since the start and is known all over the net, yet they didn’t fix it in any of the AU’s.

    Meh.

On Timesplitters 2 I clocked 7 days and 2 hours on the game time, then my save corrupted. I was at 96% completion.

So GOD do I sympathise with you.

Before all this patch stuff games didn’t fell less broken coding wise but we simply didn’t notice any glitches or care that much in the days of split screen and lan.

I’m just happy developers can patch games after release and if they don’t (like here) well it’s pure lazyness if the glitch is well known.

  13. Posted April 5, 2007 at 10:44 am | Permalink

Well, I agree that they felt less broken [gamestesters did a better job!], but games are getting a lot more complex now. So much more code, etc. I mean just look how big Oblivion is….

    Have you played Oblivion?

It lists all known issues and [if possible] ways to counteract it.

It didn’t work but thank you the site helped me with a couple of questions like if I should keep Umbra, and anyone who has Umbra knows what a greatly unique sword it is. Word of advice, if your one of the people who want to start a new game with Umbra the trick is to turn the difficulty down and tricking her into falling into the pit of spikes it will take a while and if your lucky you might even see her get her ass wooped by a mudcrab. She is to busy being pissed off at you to notice the mudcrab. Bonus damage!! UMBRA IS THE #1 BEST SWORD IN THE WHOLE GAME!!!!!!!!!! By far…a few points.

Yea I Quit Oblivion, 1 reason: Im A Level 20 Night Blade, I Am Atm Doing the quest for lance lachance and i have to kill some kajjit J’ghasta, Jghasta is no where to be found (it said hes in his house.) so, i looked everywhere in the town (bruma i think it was) for him. finally i check the fighters guild for the hell of it, and i see a bunch of people, but no Jgasta, so i started training my blade skill, and Guy with freaking armor on walks in front of me, i hit him and everyone starts attacking me, so i yielded, and they refused it…idk why….so then i killed them, a guard comes through the door, i said resist arrest (i did nothing wrong) and i killed him, then another guard comes in and starts attacking me, so i killed him, and then i said screw this, and i went to go out the door and guess what???? THE FUCKING DOOR IS LOCKED VERY HARD AND I HAVE NO GOD DAM LOCKPICKS. ive searched evry chest barrel and ect for a lock pick, and i only have a hard lock and below spell.

so tell me what to do now? ive spent fuking so muhc tiem with the dam game, and now im locked INSIDE the freaking fighters guild in Bruma…..Fuck Oblivion…it was good while it lasted.

I just ran into a glitch today. I was doing the Thieves Guild Quest line because I had just remembered that I hadn’t done the final quests (out of all the main factions, main quest, and shivering isles main quest) and since I fenced over 1500 gold when I only needed 700, it won’t update the Independent Thievery thing. I’m expose to be doing the boots quest (with the vampire). If anyone has fixed this glitch (on the 360 not the pc) than please tell me how I can. I already tried roaming around in that one girl’s house with the dogs that the gray fox is expose to appear in and roaming around in Cheydinhal or howver you spell it.

I’ve been playing Oblivion for quite a while now and I’ve encountered a few bugs that have really annoyed me.

One of them was the quest where you had to uncover Thoromir’s business thing. The moment I was in the Mausoleum, and killed that grave robber, Hieronymus Lex stormed in and arrested me. I didn’t have the time to pickpocket the graverobber or take the items I needed as proof. I went to jail (had no money and was too low leveled to fight), came back and what did I find? The mausoleum locked with both the proof and Hieronymus Lex inside. Does anyone know where I can get the key for that stupid mausoleum? Because I need both the proof and Hieronymus Lex for quests. The door can’t be lockpicked.

And another question, can’t you have two horses at the same time? I own a black horse as well as Shadowmere. Though wherever I go there’s only Shadowmere with me. I guess when Shadowmere dies I get the black horse back? Tough horse though. I’m entirely satisfied with Shadowmere, but I just wondered.

Overall I’m pretty positive about the game. I’m spending more time doing quests and finishing guilds rather than doing the main quest. It bored me and I quickly found out I had to be a lot stronger to face all those creatures of Oblivion. So I trained, raised 8 levels or so, went back to Oblivion only to find the creatures having raised 8 levels as well. Which irritated me and made me go back to the normal world and continue my ‘normal’ life as an assassin. We’ll see when I continue the main quest.

Anyway, if anyone could answer the question about the mausoleum’s key, I’d be extremely thankful!

(by the way, 200+ of playing hours is nothing special. I made 750+ hours with Call of Duty 2)

You can have as much horses you want, but only one can travel with you, the one you ”used” last will come with you.
For example, i have a White Anvil Horse and a Black Cheydinhal Horse, if I ride on the White Horse, he/she will fast-travel with me, but if I ride on my Black Horse later, the Black Horse will go with me.

I’m fairly sure you have to wait in the Imperial City, if you’re not waiting already. For me, I’d always fast travel and sleep in a bedroll out in the waterfront until someone showed up. Also, I don’t see why the Independent Thievery wouldn’t update. I stole everything I could get my hands on in the beginning of the game, then joined the guild and had over 2000 coins worth of junk fenced off from the start. Everything auto-updated fine for me. o.o

So, I’m trying to finish up the thieves guild & I am at the missing to retrieve Ahdarji’s Heirloom. I have talked to all the NPCs necessary & I’m instructed to sneak into Alessia Caro’s room at night to steal the ring back from her jewelry box. First off, I rarely ever find her in bed regardless of the hour. When I do find her in bed there’s no ring in the jewelry box. I can’t pickpocket her to get it either. Any ideas? I have 4 saves, but they are unfortunately all since I started this mission…
