Gaming memories – Condemned

Some of the recent nightmares I’ve had were sort of related to this moment in Condemned though the game most certainly isn’t the reason they have occured.

I’m still not sure why I bought and played the game. I don’t like scary films or scary books, but particularly not scary games. For some reason I saw Condemned for £5 and decided it would be a good idea to buy it. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.

Initially I didn’t get past the first level as I became too scared to play any more. Some weeks after that my housemate at the time got the game for the PC and practically forced me to sit by him so he wouldn’t be too scared. We screamed at quite a few places.

Some time later I finally completed the game myself, all the time while talking to @Spidermatt on voice chat whilst he was playing the game at exactly the same parts as me. It’s like co-op without being co-op. I still admire him for listening to my random screaming despite knowing when they’d occur!

One of the creepiest moments of the game is also one of my favourite gaming moments. It’s scary, very scary, but it’s incredibly well done and I love how a game can have this much of an effect.

Setting the scene: This is about 3/4’s of the way through the game in an abandoned department store. The player is searching for a serial killer who prides himself on torturing victims. Completely out of the blue this happens.

Yes, shop mannequins coming closer and closer is terrifying to me and it’s made a lasting impression on me.
